SerraEnzyme® is a dietary supplement providing serrapeptase — a proteolytic enzyme — in a delayed release capsule designed to support its delivery to the small intestine.

Serrapeptase (also known as serratiopeptidase) is a proteolytic enzyme — meaning it breaks down proteins through a process called hydrolysis. It was originally isolated from bacteria naturally present in the gut of the silkworm, where it is used to dissolve the protein structure of the silkworm's cocoon. Serrapeptase used in dietary supplements today is produced through a controlled laboratory fermentation process, making it suitable for both vegetarians and vegans.

As a proteolytic enzyme, serrapeptase works by selectively breaking down certain proteins into their component amino acids. When taken as a dietary supplement on an empty stomach, serrapeptase passes through the stomach and is absorbed in the small intestine, where it enters the bloodstream and becomes systemically available throughout the body. In biological fluids, serrapeptase binds to alpha-2 macroglobulin, a naturally occurring transport protein, which carries it to tissues where it can perform its proteolytic activity while protecting it from immune recognition.*

The delayed release capsule format of SerraEnzyme® is specifically designed to support this delivery pathway. The capsule is formulated to resist dissolution in the acidic environment of the stomach — protecting the enzyme from gastric acid degradation — and instead releases its contents in the more neutral environment of the small intestine, where absorption is more efficient. The formula is phthalate-free, using a gellan gum-based delayed release mechanism rather than the phthalate coatings used in some other timed-release supplement formulations.

SerraEnzyme® should be taken on an empty stomach to allow the delayed release capsule to pass through the stomach and reach the small intestine without being delayed by food, maximising the efficiency of this delivery mechanism.
